THE LADY VANISHES (1938)

An old woman’s disappearance during a train ride leads a baffled young woman into a dizzying web of intrigue. Delicious mystery-comedy with Hitchcock at his best, including a witty script by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, and wonderful performances by Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford who scored such a hit as a pair of twits that they repeated those roles in several other films! Based on Ethel Lina White’s novel “The Wheel Spins”. Remade in 1979 with Elliott Gould, Cybill Shepherd, and Angela Lansbury.

THE 39 STEPS (1935)

A classic Hitchcock mystery with overtones of light comedy and romance, as innocent Donat is pulled into spy-ring activities. The memorable banter between Donat and Carroll, who thinks he’s a criminal, set the style for sophisticated dialogue for years. John Buchan’s novel was adapted by Charles Bennett and Alma Reville; additional dialogue by Ian Hay. This movie was remade twice; in 1959 and 1978.

LIFEBOAT (1944)

A penetrating revelations about shipwreck survivors adrift in lonely lifeboat during WW2. Bankhead is remarkable as spoiled journalist, Slezak fine as Nazi taken aboard. Only Hitchcock would take on the challenge of such a film – and succeed. Jo Swerling adapted John Steinbeck’s original story. Remade in 1993 as a TV movie “Lifepod”.

THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939)

A genuine American classic based on L. Frank Baum’s story of a Kansas girl who goes “Over the Rainbow” to a land of colorful characters and spirited adventure. A perfect cast in the perfect fantasy, featuring Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg’s unforgettable score. Just as good the fifteenth time as it is the first time. This movie won Oscars for “Over the Rainbow” and Herbert Stothart’s scoring, plus a special miniature award for Judy. Previous filmed in 1925; remade as THE WIZ (set in N.Y.C.), OZ (Australia), and for TV in 2005 with the Muppets. A pair of sequels: Journey Back to Oz and Return to Oz.

JERSEY BOYS (2014)

Clint Eastwood’s big screen version of the Tony Award-winning musical, the film tells the story of the musical group The Four Seasons featuring Frankie Valli. The Four Seasons is known for hits “Sherry” which quickly became a major hit, followed by two more, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” and a later hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”. A soundtrack album Jersey Boys: Music from the Motion Picture and Broadway Musical was released on June 25, 2014. The albums is a mix of original recordings by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, new recordings by the film cast, and tracks from the original Broadway cast recording.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC – Sing-a-long (1965)

Call it corn if you like, but blockbuster Rodgers & Hammerstein musical based on Austria’s real-life Von Trapp family, who fled their homeland in 1938 to escape from Nazi rule, pleased more people than practically any other film in history. Fine music, beautiful scenery help offset coy aspects of script. Five Oscars include Best Picture, Director, Score Adaptation (Irwin Kostal), Editing (William Reynolds). Screen play by Ernest Lehman, based on the Howard Lindsay-Russel Crouse Broadway show. Songs include "Do Re Mi", “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, and title tune. Usually cut for TV to 145 minutes.

THE KING'S SPEECH (2010)

THE MONUMENTS MEN (2014)
