An African, enslaved by farmers in Groton, MA, Bode was probably a teenager when he spent months alone in Mason tending the cattle of the Groton farmers, returning year after year during the 1730's, when Mason was a wilderness. Elizabeth Orton "Twig" Jones, researched about Bode and told his story to Mason school children. In 2008 a bronze statue of Bode, sculpted by myself, was dedicated in memory of Twig. Twig had always wanted a statue of Bode to sit on a rock where he used to camp, in the meadow next to today's Mason Town Office and Police Station. Liz Fletcher")

The Abenacki lived in villages being primarily farmers growing corn, beans and squash which could be stored over the winter, The males hunted wildlife while the women tended the fields.
