The 2017 West End revival of 42ND STREET at London’s historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane was one of the most ambitious stagings of the Tony Award-winning musical ever mounted, featuring a cast of more than 50 tap-dancing performers in a dazzling recreation of 1930s Broadway. Filmed live over multiple performances in November 2018 with eight 4K cameras, the production was directed for the screen by Ross MacGibbon in collaboration with stage director Mark Bramble (co-author of the book). It premiered in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 10 November 2019 (with over 550 venues participating), later reaching US theatres via Fathom Events. The result is a vibrant, high-definition capture of the show’s iconic tap sequences, glittering costumes, and feel-good backstage story that preserved every chorus kick and show-stopping number for audiences who missed the live run, which closed in January 2019.
This cinema version transforms the already spectacular Drury Lane production into an accessible blockbuster event, letting viewers experience the full scale of the largest-ever staging of the musical from the best seats in the house while adding cinematic intimacy through close-ups on the precision footwork and emotional performances. The timeless score by Harry Warren and Al Dubin shines brighter on the big screen, with classics like “42nd Street,” “We’re in the Money,” and “Lullaby of Broadway” delivered by a powerhouse ensemble that celebrates the pure joy of musical theatre. It remains a glowing testament to the “show must go on” spirit, now forever preserved as a glittering time capsule of West End magic.
