Filmed over four years, Concerto: A Beethoven Journey follows celebrated Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes on an extraordinary musical quest: to immerse himself in Beethoven’s five piano concertos and discover anew the genius, humanity and revolutionary spirit behind some of the greatest music ever written. Award-winning filmmaker Phil Grabsky follows Andsnes from his home in Norway to concert halls around the world, capturing intimate rehearsals, remarkable performances and the pianist’s thoughtful insights into Beethoven and his music. The result is both a portrait of a world-class musician at work and an illuminating exploration of one of history’s most influential composers.
Performing with the acclaimed Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Andsnes places the piano at the heart of the ensemble, directing from the keyboard and bringing audiences extraordinarily close to the music. Grabsky’s cameras have exceptional access to the performances, allowing Beethoven’s concertos to take center stage while the film traces the composer’s development from brilliant young virtuoso to towering musical figure.
