Hadestown: The Musical the 2026 cinema release of a professionally filmed stage production, captures Anaïs Mitchell’s Tony- and Grammy-winning folk-jazz retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth (interwoven with Hades and Persephone). Directed for the stage by Rachel Chavkin and filmed by Brett Sullivan at London’s Lyric Theatre during the 2025 West End run, the proshot reunites the original Broadway principal cast: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Patrick Page as Hades, Amber Gray as Persephone, and André De Shields as Hermes, supported by the West End ensemble. The stage musical itself earned eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, along with the 2020 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. The film version, released theatrically in North America on July 24, 2026, runs 2 hours and 21 minutes, is Not Rated (NR) by the MPAA, and features a title card marking the stage intermission point but plays continuously without a break in theaters; it shattered box-office records for Broadway proshots with a $10.24 million opening weekend across nearly 2,000 theaters and earned a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics praised the intimate, rhythmically attuned camerawork that preserves the live theatrical energy while offering cinematic close-ups unavailable from even the best seat in the house. New York Times critic Chris Azzopardi called it “its own kind of triumph,” noting that “Sullivan isn’t just honoring the stage production. He is showing us what only cinema can.” TheaterMania’s Zachary Stewart described it as “a magnificent film capture,” highlighting the electricity between the leads and the enduring power of the performances years after Broadway.
